Pilgrimage in the U.S. to Where Catholicism and Bourbon Matured Together

In episode 43, “Kentucky Catholics and Bourbon,” Tom and Noëlle talk about how Catholicism and bourbon sort of “grew up together” in the late 18th century in the area around Bardstown, Kentucky.

By 1808, in part due to the Catholic bourbon makers, Bardstown was one of the most important cities west of the Appalachians.

So when the Church was looking to establish a diocese west of the Appalachians, Bardstown was the logical choice.

Join us on this Catholic pilgrimage in America to this place where Bishop Benedict Joseph Flaget poured himself out for 30-plus years. Where Edward Dominic Fenwick, OP first planted the Dominicans. Where Father Stephen Badin evangelized and helped establish the Sisters of Loretto. And where the Trappists of Gethsemani welcome retreatants to their peaceful plot.

This also is the land where great bourbon names like Basil Hayden, Wathen, Willet, JW Dant, Calvert, and Jim Beam all trace their lineage.

Tom and Noelle at Angel's Envy
Dear Friends,

We are so happy to offer this pilgrimage to a truly remarkable place. For most Americans, Kentucky mostly means bluegrass music, bourbon, and horse racing.

But this “Kentucky Holy Land” is so much more.

I grew up in northeast Ohio, and I had no idea that central Kentucky — just a 7-hour drive away — was such an important place in the life of the Church here in America. I am very excited to bring pilgrims to Bardstown and its surrounding towns, and to walk where Bishop Flaget, Father Badin, the earliest Dominicans, Father Nerinckx, the Sisters of Loretto, and so many holy and devoted lay men and women of faith labored to establish the Church west of the Appalachians.

And that this blessed place also happens to be where bourbon was born — and that they happened at about the same time! — truly seems like a sign from God.

We will pray where these holy men and women prayed, and we will sample the local spirits during this five-day pilgrimage.

Join us on this pilgrimage to this unforgettable place!

—Tom Crowe
