Henriette DeLille was an octroon and was expected to become a “kept woman” within the dominating system of plaçage. But she had received an education from Catholic sisters who taught that such a lifestyle was immoral, and she rejected what was expected of her. Instead she founded a religious community to educate young children of any race.
