Episode 160
Bishop Benedict Joseph Flaget (1763 – 1850) was the first bishop of Bardstown, later the Dioceses of Louisville, Kentucky (1808 – 1850). He was probably the most important bishop of the early church in America not named John Carroll. He spent the majority of his four decades as bishop traveling by horseback and on foot through his vast diocese. He was an incredibly holy and wise man whose counsel was sought on all Church matters in America and even in Rome when matters touching on America arose. He was also beloved of his people who sent up such an uproar when he tried to retire due to infirmity and illness that he was forced to resume his episcopal position. He remained in that position for another 18 years until his death in 1850.
