Alfred Joyce Kilmer was a great literary figure of the early 20th century, and he became Catholic as an adult. He became a lauded poet and lecturer, but he left behind a promising career and his wife and kids to serve as a sergeant with the Fighting 69th during World War I. He was killed in France while on a daring reconnaissance mission.
