John Dubois escaped the French Revolution and came to the U.S. with letters from school friend Robespierre, lived with James Monroe, learned English from Patrick Henry, offered Mass in the Virginia statehouse, founded Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, helped Elizabeth Ann Seton establish the Sisters of Charity, and became the third bishop of New York.
