Father Pierre de Smet, SJ, was a joy-filled missionary from Belgium who traveled all over the great plains and the Pacific Northwest and up into Canada in pursuit of souls to evangelize. He was the best friend the American Indians had, and was instrumental in negotiating many peace treaties, including one with his friend, Sitting Bull.
