Born in the aftermath of the French Revolution, Simon Gabriel Bruté was a devout Catholic and became a medical doctor before studying for the priesthood. He came to America and served at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg where he was spiritual director to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. He was named first bishop of Vincennes, Indiana (now the Archdiocese of Indianapolis).
