Father Benjamin Petit was a French immigrant priest who ministered to the Potawatomi in northern Indiana, and when the government forced the Potawatomi to leave their land for a reservation in Kansas, Father Petit insisted on going with them. The march, known as the Potawatomi Trail of Death, resulted in the death of many, and eventually the death of Father Petit.
